Gillian Horn joins the School of Architecture as a Visiting Professor
Gillian Horn will join the School of Architecture this autumn as a Visiting Professor, under an Award for Architecture from the Royal Academy of Engineering.
Gillian is an architect with over 20 years of professional experience in practice, teaching, research and design advice. She is committed to the valuable contribution of research in design and in practice, is a founder member of the Research Practice Leads group of architects , which brings together architects practices to discuss research opportunities (set up by Prof Flora Samuel). She has recently been invited to become a trustee of the Design Council, which she will join in early 2019.
Gillian says, "I am very excited to be joining a new school of architecture that is committed to bridging the gap between education and practice and proactively focusing on the value and role of architects in the construction industry. My role as Visiting Professor in Interdisciplinary Education in the Built Environment very much fits into the ethos and ambitions of the school. I hope to bring my experience from both practice and research to help open up the interdisciplinary nature of good design and to help Reading students develop the skills and approaches that employers and the industry are in need of. I will be working directly with students , teaching at Undergraduate level and informing the discussion around the emerging master programme which has the potential to offer interdisciplinary professional education."
Gillian has been a partner for 14 years at Penoyre & Prasad, a design-led practice recognised with many design and sustainability awards, and holds a varied and dynamic portfolio of roles including as a 'Wise Friend' advisor to Urban Design London, a not-for-profit organisation that supports local authorities in creating well-designed places; Chair of Urban Design London's Architecture panel; Chair of Waltham Forest Design Review Panel; Co-chair of Wandsworth Council Design Review Panel; Panel member of the Old Oak and Park Royal PLACE review group; Panel member of Oxford Design Review Panel; and Design Review Panel member of Design South East.
Gillian's academic roles have included teaching at the Architectural Association, the University of Cambridge, Kingston University, and Greenwich University, and she currently sits as an external examiner at University of Plymouth (BArch) and previously at University of East London (BArch and March) and University of Manchester (March). Gillian is also currently completing a funded doctoral research thesis on the schism between elite and popular taste at the University of Sheffield funded by the White Rose College of Arts and Humanities.
