The RREF Telethon

The inaugural RREF Telethon has raised a fantastic £22,800 in support of the RREF Annual Fund and the next generation of property professionals, a great testament to the generosity of Real Estate & Planning alumni. The Annual Fund has been launched to support four key areas within Real Estate & Planning: widening access to real estate education and the profession, innovative teaching and learning, research talent and the provision of bursaries and scholarships.

In a letter sent to alumni in advance of the telethon, Professor Andrew Baum, Founder of RREF, emphasised the power of collective philanthropy and urged alumni to consider donating to the fund. During the two week campaign, run from the RREF IT lab in the Henley Business School, a team of nine students spoke with 457 Real Estate & Planning alumni. The student callers enjoyed these conversations and took the opportunity to learn about the experiences of alumni, both whilst at Reading and after entering industry.

RREF TelethonAfter exchanging stories about the courses and University both past and present and discussing the projects that RREF has planned, 74 alumni chose to make a gift, 29 of which were regular gifts via Direct Debit. This is an incredible result as the combined support of a number of alumni translates into a significant resource and regular gifts enable us to ensure that our initiatives can support both current and future students. For instance, a gift of £15 per month, with Gift Aid, will raise £1,125 in five years. This is the equivalent of a bursary, which has the potential to change the life of a student struggling with the burden of financial hardship.

In addition to the far-reaching impact of the donations made during the campaign, the student callers benefited in numerous ways from taking part in the telethon. The transferable skills that they acquired through the experience will help to enhance their employability and they also left with an appreciation that every student who has graduated from Real Estate & Planning since RREF was established has benefited in some way from the generosity of their predecessors.

We are extremely grateful to all those alumni who have donated to the Annual Fund as part of the RREF telethon and, in doing so, are helping to build for the future of real estate and planning.
