The University of Reading announced in December that it had been invited by the Malaysian government to establish a campus in Southern Malaysia as part of the country's Iskandar development plan. The University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) will open in September 2014 with an initial intake of 500 students. Enrolment will rise to approximately 1,800 students by 2017 with long-term student numbers around 2000. Undergraduate and postgraduate degrees being developed for approval by accrediting bodies stretch across multiple disciplines including real estate, construction, finance, law, chemistry and pharmacy.

Real Estate offerings will begin to be delivered in 2012 and will include Finance for the Global Real Estate Industry and The Challenges of Globalisation for the Real Estate Industry.

Roger Gibbard commented "Real Estate & Planning, as part of the Henley Business School, intend to be at the forefront of this initiative, and hope to be delivering short executive education courses there later in 2012, and a full portfolio of taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes from 2014. These should be attractive not only to Malaysian students, but also from the wider SE Asian region and beyond, and should provide the opportunity for other academic initiatives to follow, including research and consultancy. Hopefully these will provide the springboard for regular exchange opportunities between UK-based and Malaysian-based students. Having a thriving alumni presence associated with the School's activities will be crucial to the success of the project, and we already have a strong alumni base locally out there to build on."
