Alumni Profiles - Paddy Allen

Did you know…?

The University of Reading's online alumni community is a fantastic resource to keep in touch with fellow classmates, book online for events, and hear all the latest news. One of the ways that our alumni can get involved is to create an alumni profile, allowing you to share what you've been up to since graduating. We love hearing your stories and there's no better advert for a university than its alumni. Our alumni profiles are designed to celebrate your achievements, memories, and the life you have led since graduating from the University of Reading. They are a fantastic way for others to learn from those who have experienced Reading and their time since graduation.PaddyAllenWebsitePhoto

Paddy Allen, a RREF alumnus and member of the RREF Events Committee, recently completed his profile; see it here.

We asked Paddy to share a few details on what he has achieved since graduating and his thoughts on his career and the industry.

What made you decide to study Real Estate & Planning at Reading?

The breadth of the subjects covered by the course was attractive to me as I still was unsure about what career I wanted to go into. Furthermore, Reading had a very strong standing in the property industry and had more industry interaction throughout the course compared to others.

What was your first career move after graduating?

I first moved to a company called Atisreal (now BNP Paribas Real Estate). I managed to secure a place on the graduate scheme after doing 3 months summer work experience after my second year. I applied for the work experience with the help of the staff in the REP department.

Where are you now and how did you get there?

I now run my own company advising buyers of residential property in London. We are opening our first international office in Sydney later in 2013 and I have also helped to co-found an internet property business. I moved from Atisreal, to a fund management business called Internos, where I was lucky enough to manage property investments on behalf of a number of global investors across Europe. This allowed me to travel, gaining confidence and experience working for clients and delivering property strategies in different markets.

Is there a moment that stands out for you as the most challenging time in your career?

My first assignment abroad, living and working in Frankfurt, was definitely a challenge. Working in a market where you don't speak the language and under pressure to achieve a number of goals in a short space of time was a hard task, but one I enjoyed and learnt a lot from.

Do you have any advice for recent graduates or those working their way up?

Be open minded, listen and be confident in yourself. Property is a long game and all experience is valuable, whether it's working in valuations, landlord & tenant or as an agent. Understanding how all the different faces of property fit together is key to moving forward and being a part of innovative projects.

Paddy graduated in 2005 and is now Director of Allen Wargent and a member of the RREF Events Committee.
