RREF Supports Students through Course Work Prizes in 2014

In 2013/14 RREF were pleased to work with a number of real estate companies to offer students the chance to win prizes as part of their course studies.

In July, Harry Smart won the Valuation Prize supported by JLL which included a £500 cash prize and a four week summer internship in the Valuation Advisory Department at JLL in London working for Chris Strathon, Director responsible for Corporate and Specialist Valuations. The prize is awarded each year for the best performing Part 2 student in Valuation of the BSc Real Estate and Planning degree and is based on exam results, course work and a final interview.JLL_Prize_Final The aim is to encourage and promote interest in valuation which is fundamental to understanding the value of commercial real estate and to enable a student to gain good insight and experience in valuation in practise and Client requirements.

‘JLL is delighted to sponsor a prize in valuation at Reading University which will not only encourage the students in a fundamental aspect of their degree but also demonstrate the important use of valuation in practice.’ Chris Strathon, Director - Valuation Advisory, JLL

Savills kindly support an annual prize worth £2,500 for undergraduate Real Estate & Planning students at the University of Reading which is awarded to Part 1 BSc Real Estate students in recognition of their contribution to project work and how effectively they work as a team. Project work makes up a third of the course in the student’s first year and half of the projects are assessed through group work. Groups are made up of five students who have to work together on three different projects over the course of the year.Savills_Team_Working_Final

As part of the prize Savills co-hosted a half day teamwork session at the University of Reading for all Part 1 students where they had a chance to reflect on their group work through the academic year as well as hear from recent graduates working at Savills who demonstrated the value of teamwork in a corporate environment.

Two teams of five were presented with £250; the best performing team overall and the most improved team through the year.
