Why is the RREF Access Internship Scheme important?

The RREF Access Internship scheme took place again this summer, with 15 Real Estate and Planning students hosted by a number of companies.

RREF Access Internships Scheme
Launched in the summer of 2010, the RREF Access Internship scheme is open to all full-time undergraduate Part 1 and Part 2 Real Estate and Planning  students, with the aim of helping them to  overcome some of the obstacles which may hinder their access to the Real Estate profession.

Through the scheme we secure host firms with whom the students are placed and the students are paid a bursary, jointly supported by the host firms and the John Tranter Memorial Fund to ensure they are able to successfully undertake the placement.

Summer 2015 Placements
This year BNP Paribas Real Estate, CBRE, Colliers, CoStar Group, Cushman & Wakefield, JLL, J Peiser Wainwright, Knight Frank, Oxford Properties, Savills, SEGRO, Strutt & Parker and Universities Partnership Programme hosted 15 students between them.

Matthew Green, Finance and Operations Director, CoStar Group UK explains why each year they take two students on this internship, “The scheme is of incredible value to us and (we believe) to the interns themselves. We believe the interns greatly appreciate the variety of types of departments and work they engage with. This year our interns fed back that they really enjoyed tasks where they had direct contact with clients and really appreciated the insight we gave them on working in an office environment.”

All of the access interns are offered valuable experience that they haven’t previoulsy enjoyed including general interaction with colleagues. Alyson Serby, HR Director, Colliers International mentioned this year that their intern was extremely proactive during his time with them and even proved to be a fantastic asset to their softball team! </o:p>

For Henry Phipps, an access intern of 2015, this opportunity was his first taste of a major property consultancy company and going into it he was not sure what to expect, or indeed whether he would enjoy the experience, but the whole experience surpassed his expectations. “The Access Internship Scheme is a fantastic scheme and has benefitted me immensely and ignited my interest in real estate even further. The support from RREF before and throughout the whole internship was excellent and I shall be sure to heavily recommend this scheme to other students who perhaps feel they face similar struggles to secure an internship”

We encourage a spread of internships across a number of organisations, large and small so if you would be interested in hosting a student for a placement during the summer of 2016 or would like to receive further information about the scheme itself, please contact the RREF Team on info@rref.reading.ac.uk  or +44 (0) 118 378 4192.
