University Celebrates 90th Anniversary

UoR 90th LogoDiscover how the University celebrated its 90th Birthday!

By Samantha Horsfield, Alumni Communications Officer for University of Reading, BA English & Philosophy (2005) & MA Children’s Literature (2013) from University of Reading.

Thursday 17 March marked the 90th anniversary of the University receiving its official charter. We had celebration events on campus throughout the day and ended with a very special Court event where Helen Gordon (Chief Executive, Royal Pharmaceutical Society), Professor Haiyan Hu (President of Beijing Institute of Technology, China) and Andrew Palmer (CMG. CVO) were recognised with honorary degrees.

This was a fantastic achievement for all three, and especially to see Helen Gordon, one of Henley’s key alumni volunteers (Chair of Henley Advisory Board and member of the Women in Leadership Board) recognised for her contribution to the University.

University musical ensembles also supported the celebrations with the Big Band playing over lunchtime in the Quad, the Chamber Choir entertaining Court with a selection including I Vow to thee my Country (composed by former Reading professor Gustav Holst), and closing the day with close harmony group Perfect Fifth.

It was also a wonderful opportunity to welcome many alumni to campus who visited throughout the day and attended Court in the evening. But we weren’t forgotten by those who lived too far away to attend – we were delighted to receive this amazing birthday message from our Chinese alumni.

As an alumna and member of staff this celebration of our wonderful University made me feel quite emotional to think of all the people around the world who hold such affection for this amazing institution.

Like Samantha, RREF is proud to be part of the Henley Business School within the University of Reading, and would like to thank all of those who have been part of the last 90 years. Here’s to the next 90!
