Peter Byrne Travel Fund

By Ben Herbert, Development Officer, RREFPeter Byrne

Professor Peter Byrne (1946-2015) was an integral part of real estate education at Reading from its inception. Ever present in the department through its evolution from the Department of Land Management and Development, through to the School of Real Estate and Planning within Henley Business School, Peter was a major part of the School's success both before and during his term as Head of School. In memory of Peter's contribution and to celebrate his lasting legacy to the School, the Peter Byrne Travel Fund has been set up to support the delivery of high quality research within the School through the provision of travel bursaries to PhD students.

Peter played a leading role in developing methods to analyse and understand real estate markets, bringing rigorous quantitative methods to the forefront of practice, becoming a Professor of Real Estate Dynamics on his own journey. When Peter joined the department there were very few PhD students carrying out research into real estate. Over the last 45 years, however, the number of postgraduate researchers in the sector has grown, with a large proportion of these students having been guided by Peter's teaching and supervision, and many of them have gone on to take up influential positions within the property sector and academia. It is therefore his enthusiasm for mentoring and encouraging the next generation of researchers for which he is fondly remembered by many.

Peter was incredibly passionate about his students being able to attend conferences and access research materials from outside of the University, not only to develop and share their own knowledge but also to build global networks. It is for this reason that the Reading Real Estate Foundation, in collaboration with the School of Real Estate and Planning, have decided to honour his life's work by launching the Peter Byrne Travel Fund. Supporting PhD students above and beyond the current provision, the Fund will enable them to undertake travel related to their research without experiencing financial hardship. This will increase the number of conferences that Real Estate and Planning PhD students are able to both attend and present at, as well as aiding them to access resources that are vital to the success of their research.

Carol Byrne, Peter's widow, has been working with us to facilitate the establishment of the Fund and its seeding. In the coming weeks we will launch a number of initiatives reaching out to those most closely associated with Peter at the School and beyond to develop the Fund and make it a reality.

'The Peter Byrne Travel Fund will enable PhD students to attend conferences or to undertake fieldwork. This fund will be of immense value, enabling students to extend their empirical research and also to foster links with the academic community. It is a fitting memorial to Peter, who was passionate about creating opportunities for high quality PhD research in Real Estate and Planning at Reading.'

Dr Cathy Hughes, Head of Real Estate and Planning
