Pathways to Property: Students experience world of work

'The work placement has been invaluable.'

By Emily Archer, Pathways to Property Project Manager, RREF

Pathways Work ExperienceFollowing the success of the Pathways to Property Summer School in July 2016, the students who attended were offered a further opportunity to learn more about real estate during October half-term. With the support of 18 firms, 38 students completed a week-long work experience placement. The students were keen to learn more about the world of property, but the placement also provided them with the opportunity to experience working in a corporate office environment; an arena many had not experienced before.

With firms generously offering placements across the UK, students were able to stay close to home. The Monday saw the students start in their new roles as they were welcomed by their host firms and introduced to the teams they would be working with. During the course of the week, the students were kept busy helping teams with research, visiting sites and marketing suites, rotating across different teams to learn what each did, and enjoying being given 'real work' to do. Aadam commented that his work experience placement was 'absolutely amazing. I attended meetings with managers, I went on to the construction site as well. Overall, it was great and I'd recommend it to everyone!'

Offering students the opportunity to build on what they learnt at the Summer School and to expand their knowledge of property and the industry as a whole, the placements also provided the chance for the students to further explore the huge variety of career options available within the sector. Beth stated that, 'from the second I walked in I was treated as anyone else who worked there. From the first day I was taken out on inspections, valuations and meetings and given proper work to do to help with acquisition requests and market reports. I honestly didn't realise quite how much you could learn in a week but everyone was unbelievably helpful. People in the office showed me almost every aspect of commercial property so I could figure out what interested me.'

At the close of the week, all of the students who provided feedback noted that the work placement had been an enjoyable experience and that they had learnt a lot. Many of them are seriously considering a career within the property sector, with 74% of those providing feedback stating that they are considering or planning to study real estate at university or to apply for a property-related apprenticeship scheme. Zahin concluded that 'the work placement … has been invaluable to me, and I have genuinely had an amazing time - the colleagues I worked with were fab and got me involved in every aspect of the working life. The placement has definitely made me more certain that I wish to pursue a career in property.' We offer huge thanks to all the firms who offered a placement and hosted students during the week; without this support a key component of the Pathways to Property programme would not take place.

The Summer School has become a significant highlight in the Pathways to Property calendar, and applications for the 2017 Summer School will be opening at the end of January. If you know any year 12 students who might be interested, please do encourage them to visit our website for further information.
