By Chris Pyrah, Development AssistantJo Allen Resized

We were able to speak to Jo Allen, Chief Executive of Frogmore to discuss their recent donation to Pathways to Property and what their take is on the current state of the real estate sector.

What motivated you and your company to donate to Pathways to Property?

We feel that promoting the opportunities inherent in a career in real estate, so that they are more widely known and understood by as many young people as possible, regardless of their background, is undoubtedly a worthwhile and much needed mission.

Why do you think it is important to foster diversity in the real estate industry?

The industry contributes and shapes the built environment in which we all live and work. As such, real estate advisors, developers and investors should be representative of a cross section of society. A lack of diverse thinking creates only tunnel vision and stifles creativity.

Are there any changes that you think should be brought about in the sector?

By and large real estate is a forward thinking and innovative sector, but we do need to widen the pool of talent to innovate and move with the times.

What made you decide to pursue a career in real estate?

A career in property offers a variety and is not just a 'stuck at your desk 9-5' standard office job. Buildings and shared spaces are something with which we can all identify. I wanted to be out and about, making a contribution to society and, amongst other things, it gives me great pleasure to know that the investment returns we generate often go towards pension plans both in the UK and around the world.

What advice would you give young people considering a career in real estate?

Work hard, keep abreast of current affairs and market news and develop excellent networking and people skills. Above all, adopt a can do attitude.

What can you see as being the biggest challenge to the sector in the near future?

Keeping abreast of technology, disrupters and the ever quickening pace of change are the biggest challenges I can see to the sector. The built environment needs to respond to and meet those demands.
